Lebensmittelverschwendung in Österreich

In Österreich werden pro Jahr über 1 Millionen Tonnen an genießbaren Lebensmitteln weggeworfen.  Dieses nicht nur ökologische, sondern auch ökonomische Problem bringt viele Menschen in einen ethischen Zwiespalt. Die Konsequenzen von Lebensmittelverschwendung stellen nämlich eine Belastung für das Klima und die Umwelt dar. Grund dafür: Zur Herstellung und Produktion von Lebensmitteln werden Energie, Landfläche und Ressourcen benötigt.

16% der Treibhausgase unserer Ernährung sind auf die Lebensmittelverschwendung zurückzuführen.

133 kg genießbare Lebensmittel werfen österreichische Haushalte in den Müll, das sind an die 800€ zeigt eine Studie der BOKU Wien. 

Ursachen der Lebensmittelverschwendung

Landwirtschaft
zu wenig Abnehmer am Markt, Schädlingsbefall, falsche Lagerung

Industrie
Überproduktion, Transportschäden, falsche Lagerung

Gastronomie 
Nachfrage unkalkulierbar, falsche Einschätzung von Portionsgrößen

Großhandel
wenig Nachfrage in Verhältnis zum Angebot

Verbraucher
Wir sind gewöhnt, eine breite Auswahl an Lebensmittel zu bekommen und
vergessen, welcher Energieaufwand hinter den Produkten steckt.

Lebensmittelabfälle

Die international gültige Definition des Wortes Lebensmittelabfall betrifft: alle Lebensmittel, die zum menschlichen Verzehr hergestellt wurden, aber nicht konsumiert wurden (vgl. Obersteiner & Luck, 2020). Es wird zwischen „vermeidbaren Lebensmittelabfällen“ und „nicht vermeidbaren Lebensmittelabfällen“ (= Teile von Lebensmitteln, die vor dem Verzehr entfernt werden, bsp. Knochen) unterschieden. Die Summe der österreichischen Lebensmittelabfälle im Restmüll kann prozentuell in 57% vermeidbare Lebensmittelabfälle und43% nicht vermeidbare Lebensmittelabfälle eingeteilt werden.
